- The union minister of Women and Child Development (WCD) Maneka Gandhihas launched an online portal “nari.nic.in” for the empowerment of women.
Note: The portal will provide easy access to information on government schemes and initiatives for women.
- The Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekarhas inaugurated the nine-day World Book fair at -- New Delhi.
Note: Environment issues like climate change, global warming, and water pollution will be the main theme for this year's Fair.The World Book Fair is organized every year by the National Book Trust and India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO).
- Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has rolled outAadhaar-based online verification of mobile connections for non-resident Indians, senior citizens above 70 years and physically challenged persons.
Note: The service can be used by senior citizens who do not have Aadhaar number or have the biometric ID but their mobile number is not registered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). They can enter his existing mobile number and then the one-time password sent on that number.
- Three Ministries (Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and Ministry of Science & Technology) have signed MoU (Memorandum of understanding) on Technology Mission for -- Indian
Railways.
Note: The funding contribution in the Technology Mission is by the railways ministry (30 %), by the HRD ministry (25 %) and by the Department of Science and Technology (25 %). The Technology Mission will conduct research and development projects in the fields of heavy haul, safety, energy, environment, and urban railways.
- Two-day design workshop on Global HousingConstruction Technology Challenge in New Delhi.
Note: Around 600 million people of the country are expected to be living in cities by 2030 and a huge task will be to provide them with affordable housing system.
- National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs. 372.51 crore loanassistance under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) to Odisha for irrigation and rural bridge projects for the last quarter of this fiscal.
Note: NABARD has also sanctioned 14 Rural Bridge Projects under Biju Setu Yojana with RIDF loan assistance of Rs 242.34 crore. The NABARD is an apex development financial institution in India, headquartered at Mumbai with branches all over India.
- Goa will host the third edition of the Science Film Festival of India “SCI-FFI” from 16th January 2018.
Note: School students have been invited to submit films shot on a mobile phone on any topic of science to win prizes.The objective the festival to boost the culture of science films, all the films submitted should be related to science and technology.
- Govt makes packaging of 90% of food grainsand 20% of sugar products in mandatory in Jute material.
Note: The approval mandates that 90% of the food grains and 20% of the sugar products will be mandatorily packed in jute bags. This decision will benefit farmers and workers located in the Eastern and North-Eastern regions of the country particularly in West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya and Tripura.
- The Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has commissioned and achieved design throughput of the world’s largest refinery off the gas cracker at Jamnagar, Gujarat.
Note: This refinery will have a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum along with downstream plants and utilities.The facility uses off-gases from two refineries of RIL at Jamnagar as feedstock.
- The Union Home Minister has appointed B. R. SharmaCommittee to recommend changes in the existing laws of playing of the National Anthem in cinema halls and public places.
Note: B. R. Sharma is Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Committee will make recommendations in context of existing Acts and orders relating to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
- Indian Railways have launched SFOORTIapp for freight managers.
Note: The Smart Freight Operation Optimization and Real Time Information (SFOORTI)app provides features for monitoring and managing freight business using
Geographic Information System(GIS), Views and Dashboard. Now, with this app trains (passenger and freight) can be tracked over Zones, Divisions, and Sections in single GIS View.
- India and Saudi Arabia has signed an agreement to revive the option of sending Haj pilgrims through sea route for
Haj 2018.
Note: Now, the ships available are modern and well-equipped to ferry 4000 to 5000 persons at a time. They can cover the 2300-odd nautical miles one-side distance between Mumbai and Jeddah within just 3-4 days (old ships to take 12-15 days).
- Charlie-435 has been commissioned by Indian CoastGuard at Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry. Note: The ‘Charlie-435’ is the state-of-art patrol vessel, equipped with modern navigation and communication system. The vessel will strengthen the coastal security between Chennai and Kanyakumari in the Eastern Coastal region.

The Matunga Rly station has figured in the ‘Limca Book of Records 2018’ for having an all-woman staff.Note: A team of 41 women staffers at the station includes personnel from the RPF, commercial and operating departments,under the supervision of station manager Mamta Kulkarni.

The Indian satellites are 710 kg Cartosat-2 series for Earthobservation, a 100 kgs micro satellite and a five kg nano satellite.- Election Commission (EC) of India has constituted a 14-member committee headed by Umesh Sinhato suggest changes to Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act.
Note: The Act prohibits poll campaign in the last 48 hours of voting. The Committee will study the impact of social media during the silence period and suggest modifications to the election law and model code of conduct.- The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has slashed international incoming call termination rate to 30paise from 53 paise.
Note: The new rate will be effective from 1st of February. TRAI has reduced the termination charges payable by an International Long-Distance Operator to the access provider.- Madhya Pradesh hosted theAnnual Conference of Director Generals of Police (DGP) and Inspector
Generals of Police (IGP) 2018.Note: Prime Minister has attended the conference held at Tekanpur, Gwalior. Note: The three-stage solid propellant Agni-V missile has a strike range of 5000 Kilo meters and can carry a nuclear warhead of more than one tones. The missile has been developed by the DRDO.

Note: The games will be held in 16 disciplines include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Shooting, Swimming, Weightlifting and Wrestling at five venues.The country’s brightest talent in the under-17 age group will compete in the Games.- The name of the computer launched for weather forecasting in Noida—Mihir

With an aim to improve India’s capacity in weather forecasting including Air quality forecasting at the block level, the High-Performance Computer (HPC) System named ‘Mihir’ (meaning ‘Sun’) was dedicated to the nation at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida.- The Union Home Ministry will set up Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), an apex coordination centrein New Delhi to deal with cybercrimes.
